Overview
By the end of 2007, thermal contributed to around 77.73% of China’s installed capacity, versus 20.36% for hydro, 1.24% for nuclear and 0.67% for wind and others. According to the State Grid, the proportion of coal-fired installed capacity to total installed capacity in China will fall to 72.77% by 2010E and to 66.40% by 2020E, while the weightings for hydropower, nuclear and others (including wind, biomass, solar, etc) as a percentage of total installed capacity should rise by 2%, 1.9% and 2.6% from 2010-20E, respectively.
China will soon revise the renewable energy development plan with total spending of at least RMB 2 trillion and put more focus on nuclear, wind and solar power. It aims to lift power generation from renewable energy to 15% by 2020 and further above 30% by 2040. Of the State Council’s recently announced Rmb20bn “technological enhancement fund” (mainly through lending with preferential interest rates) in six areas, one was to promote domestic equipment for wind power and nuclear power. It has been said that the Rmb20bn loan will lead to a total investment of Rmb46bn.
